BOULDER — The same afternoon that Robert Oakley fatally shot his ex-wife and himself, he sent text messages to his parents saying, “She’s trying to kill me,” police said today.

Boulder police say the 39-year-old divorced father of two lured Katelin Oakley, 30, to his north Boulder home on April 1, shot her in the head with a 9mm handgun, then killed himself with a shotgun.

According to 911 tapes released today, Robert Oakley’s father, Godfrey Oakley, called Boulder police from Atlanta a few minutes after 3 p.m., asking officers to check on his son.

“He just sent me a text message that said his estranged wife was killing him,” Godfrey Oakley told a dispatcher. “I don’t know what that means.”

When the dispatcher asked for clarification, Godfrey Oakley said his son sent both parents text messages that afternoon about his ex-wife.

“He just texted me in the last few minutes, and my wife,” Godfrey Oakley said. “He texted both of us saying, ‘She’s trying to kill me.’ ”

Officers already were en route to Robert Oakley’s house at 3100 23rd St., having received an inaudible 911 call from the house a few minutes earlier.

No one talked to dispatchers in that call; only a brief grunting sound can be heard, about 30 seconds into the call.
