BOULDER, Colo.—Tests are under way to determine if a Boulder middle school is safe after a construction crew turned up asbestos in the building, prompting the evacuation of nearly 500 students and staff members.
Boulder Valley School District spokesman Briggs Gamblin says Southern Hills Middle School was evacuated just before noon Wednesday after a construction “incident” that might have released the asbestos into the school.
Gamblin says crews notified school officials about the incident Wednesday morning, and the district sent material from the work site to a Denver lab for tests. He says the tests showed the material contained asbestos, but officials don’t know yet whether students were exposed.
Gamblin says additional air tests are under way to determine if the building is safe. Results are expected late Wednesday.
