FORT COLLINS — For Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild, there are varying degrees of frustration with the development — or lack thereof — of the offense this spring.
With much-maligned quarterbacks Grant Stucker and Jon Eastman completing a higher share of their passes Wednesday than they did in a mistake-filled Tuesday session, Fairchild said he was “mildly” happier with the offense. “We still have a long way to go at the skill positions,” he said.
Fairchild has been quicker to praise the defense, especially up front.
He was glad to see reserve quarterback Klay Kubiak throw on his own for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in January.
Fairchild has been threatening Stucker and Eastman with the scenario of starting incoming freshman Nico Ranieri of Orlando, Fla.
Practice sessions.
If the Rams can get any work in today despite the forecast of precipitation, CSU will go to the stadium at 4 p.m. Friday for practice and take the weekend off. Fairchild said the “spring game” April 18 will likely have the same hybrid practice/scrimmage format as last year.
“I’d like to have a game but I don’t think we’re in a place to give up a practice,” Fairchild said.
Wide receiver Marquise Law remained out with a sprained thumb.
Buffs finally outside.
Colorado went outside Tuesday for the first time in five spring practices.
The Buffs, who were off Wednesday, had been doing all their work inside the practice bubble.
Tuesday’s wind provided a good test for one of the key spring priorities — improving place-kicking. Aric Goodman hit a few beyond 50 yards in the bubble. Outdoors, he kicked a 42-yarder in the wind with time expiring.
The Buffs will scrimmage at 10 a.m. Saturday but weather will determine where it’s held — the stadium or the bubble.
