Mama’s Little Yella Pils by Oskar Blues $8.99 per six-pack

In the midst of the deepest recession since blah-blah-blah, it’s great to see a success story like Lyons-based Oskar Blues, which has been going gangbusters and is now in 23 states, including California and Texas. The latest release from OB is a foray into pilsner, providing a formidable alternative to the standard offerings from BudMillerCoors. Mama’s is a moderately carbonated golden pour that’s as clear as a nun’s conscience, with a frothy white head. True to its craft-beer pedigree, it’s bolder than the majors, with a crisp maltiness and a hint of light citrus on the tongue that fades into a gentle hoppy finish. The pilsner style’s drinkability and clean mouthfeel will have this brew beckoning as the weather warms. The fact it comes in cans, as do all OB beers, makes it perfect for spring and summer outings. Mama’s also would pair nicely with barbecue or Mexican food. Alcohol by volume is a session-friendly 5.3 percent.
