AURORA, Colo.—Authorities have identified the man that police say was fatally shot after he armed himself with a box cutter, forced his way into an Aurora home and attacked a sleeping guest.

The Adams County coroner’s office says the man was 50-year-old Joseph Bryant. He was shot at about 3 a.m. Friday after he allegedly knocked on the door of the home, pushed the resident aside, then attacked a man who was sleeping on the couch.

The resident went to his bedroom, grabbed a pistol and shot and killed the intruder.

Investigators say it appears the resident did not commit a crime and acted within Colorado’s “Make My Day” law, which allows people to use deadly force in their homes in self-defense.

The resident’s name has not been released.
