Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt looks ahead at this week’s action:
BASEBALL
Mountain Lion encounters
Weather permitting, Saturday’s Class 4A Northern League game in Loveland between visiting Greeley West and Mountain View means a lot more to Greg Brock’s No. 3 host Mountain Lions. To date, Mountain View is a perfect 13-0 and is a game up on Broomfield in an uber-deep league. Nick Miller is an impressive 5-0 on the mound, with 36 strikeouts and an 0.88 earned run average. Miller, Derek Neeper (3-0 on the mound), Logan Moore and Ben Netzel all are hitting over .400 for the former major-leaguer Brock.
BOYS LACROSSE
Vipers biting back
Looks can be deceiving. So when the Fort Collins-area team opened the season 0-4 — including an 0-3 trip to Texas that featured a three-OT loss to Dallas Episcopal — it was really no biggie. The Vipers turned it around and are now back above .500 (5-4) and have a date with No. 3 Heritage (10-0) on Saturday in Littleton.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Gryphons’ big week
Heritage/Littleton’s co-op team, the Gryphons, has a stretch of games from today through next Thursday that will show the rest of the state what it’s really made of. Coach Nikki Kucharski (a former Cherry Creek standout) and the 6-0-1 Gryphons play at Kent Denver on Friday, have a title game rematch at Cherry Creek on Tuesday and then conclude the stretch at home against Continental league foe Chaparral (9-1).
TRACK AND FIELD
Whole lot of running going on
Twelve, count ’em, 12 track meets dot the docket Saturday. Of note, Littleton Public Schools Stadium will host the Nike Littleton Invitational, but you can also find meets at All-City Stadium and in Broomfield, Grand Junction, Harrison, Roosevelt, Durango, Rifle and Berthoud.
