Steamboat Springs ski racer Caroline Lalive has decided to retire after more than a decade on the U.S. Ski Team. A four-event racer, Lalive scored five World Cup podiums, including two second-place finishes in downhill.
Lalive, 29, competed in two Olympics (1998, 2002) and made a third team in 2006 but fractured her left knee the day she was named to the team.
A series of injuries followed that mishap, and she paid her own way on the World Cup this past winter after being dropped from the team a year ago.
“I always thought I would retire once I was ‘over it,’ ” Lalive said. “Sadly, I think my body is making the decision for me, so I’m in the process of figuring out where to go from here.
“It’s both exciting and scary.”
