GREELEY, Colo.—Colorado’s first trial in what authorities call a hate crime killing of a transgender person is headed to the jury.
Closing statements were scheduled for Wednesday in the trial of 32-year-old Allen Andrade. Prosecutors say Andrade beat a transgender teen to death in Greeley last year after discovering she was biologically male.
Colorado is one of the few states with a hate-crime law that covers transgender people. The murder of 18-year-old Angie Zapata has sparked calls for a national hate-crimes law.
Andrade has not denied beating Zapata, but his lawyers argue he snapped after discovering she was transgender and that the killing was not planned. The case should go to the jury later Wednesday.
