DENVER—A proposal to track the performance of educators is headed to the Colorado Senate for debate.

The Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously backed House Bill 1065 on Friday.

It’s been a long time in the making but is now backed by a teachers union and other education groups.

It would set up a statewide system to track the performance of teachers and principals. The main goal is to come up with solutions to the so-called “teacher gap,” where less-experienced teachers tend to work in low-income schools.

Districts could use the information to reassign teachers or order more training. But they couldn’t punish teachers for not measuring up to the performance of teachers in other districts.
