Getting your player ready...

Some people like to take in their summer music at Denver Botanic Gardens. Sipping wine and eating cucumber sandwiches while listening to the toned-down sounds of Joan Baez.

Others swing at the Wednesday night summer series at Elway’s, downing martinis in the madhouse of the courtyard as Opie goes bad again.

Give me the raunchy Sunday afternoons of Rockabilly and Ribs at Tambien. We’re talking live rockabilly bands alternating with rockabilly deejays with a huge crowd made up of bikers, lawyers, Realtors, old ladies and kids. Throw in tattoos, hot rods and choppers. Then pile the plates with Mexican BBQ, carne asada, turkey legs, spare ribs, lamb barbacoa and beer chicken, washed down with cans of cold beer.

“It’s the unique Sunday afternoon gathering,” understates Tambien boss Jesse Morreale. “The crowd is, ah, eclectic.”

It kicks in 2-7 p.m. today with Ethyl and the Regulars. Other bands this summer include Mad Max and the Wild Ones, May 10; Heidi and the Rhythm Rollers, May 24; Hellbound Eddie’s Trainwreck Trio, June 14; Kim Lenz and Her Jaguars, July 12; Deke Dickerson and the ecco-fonics, Aug. 23; and Roy Kay Trio, Sept. 13.

It’s late and it’s funny.

Don’t confuse the Girls Night Out parties I wrote about here Tuesday with the Girls Night Out Gala hosted in the fall by Girls Inc. of Metro Denver. Last year they brought in comic Rita Rudner, before that it was Wayne Brady.

This year it’s — wait for it — Craig Ferguson from “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” the funniest chat show on TV. He’ll be here Oct. 9 at the Hyatt DTC.

Angels.

Thursday is Project Angel Heart’s heartfelt funder Dining Out for Life. At more than 300 restaurants in the Denver/Boulder area, 25 percent of your meal ticket goes to PAH, which for 17 years has delivered meals to people with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.

On that day, the organization raises about 20 percent of its annual budget. This is a great group doing great things. Check it out at . And dine out Thursday — for life.

Old man Larson.

Party boy Kevin Larson has been mixing it up in Denver for 12 years — throwing legendary soirees such as the Victorian Fetish Ball.

Friday night was Larson’s seventh annual Twisted Birthday Bash with a naked theme. It also marked Larson’s 40th birthday.

So how’s he holding up as the King of Kink?

“I moderate my drinking and I don’t do drugs,” he says. “But I’m slowing down, definitely. Instead of partying all night, I go mountain biking.”

He’ll have more time for that as his Wish nightclub, above the Diamond Cabaret, closed down Saturday night. “It just wasn’t working at the level we needed,” Larson says. “Nightclubs are tough.” And not just for the patrons.

City spirit.

Saturday is Kentucky Derby Day; the Furry Scurry starts at 9 a.m. in Washington Park; Midlife Crisis, my favorite Dad Band, plays at 9 p.m. at Q’s . . . Sez who: “If at first you don’t succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.” Bill Lyon
