WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — An overdose of selenium is the probable cause of death of 21 polo horses last week, Florida state veterinarian Dr. Thomas Holt said Tuesday. Members of the Lechuza Caracas team have said that too much was put in a generic batch of a vitamin supplement given to their horses to minimize exhaustion after matches. A Florida pharmacy, which last week admitted that it incorrectly mixed medicine given to the horses, confirmed Tuesday that the ingredient was selenium.
