Problems with the penalty kill and a two-goal flurry in a 12-second span did in the Colorado Eagles in Game 1 of the Central Hockey League Ray Miron President’s Cup Finals on Wednesday night, as the Texas Brahmas beat the Eagles 5-3 in Loveland.
Tyler Skworchinski scored two power-play goals for Texas, which went 3-for-7 on the power play, including scoring at 5:44 of the third period that tied the game at 3-3. The Brahmas took the lead 12 seconds later when Scott Sheppard got the ensuing faceoff and carried the puck down the right wing, firing a shot into the top right corner past goalie Andrew Penner. The Brahmas got an insurance goal at the 16:10 mark on a fluky play, when Jordan Cameron’s flip caromed into the Eagles’ net after hitting Jason Beatty’s skate.
Kevin Ulanski scored twice for the Eagles, and Steve Haddon added a short-handed goal. Game 2 is Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
QB Stutzriem leaves Wyoming.
Quarterback Chris Stutzriem will transfer from Wyoming to Indiana State, Sycamores coach Trent Miles said. The redshirt freshman will have three years of eligibility starting this fall.
Stutzriem was 55-of-98 for 660 yards and five touchdowns last season. His best game was against Colorado State, when he went 21-of-39 for 201 yards. He passed for 2,382 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior at Lawton (Okla.) Eisenhower High School in 2006.
Indiana State is riding a 26-game losing streak over three seasons.
Stutzriem said after last season that he would not play for the team if former Cowboys coach Joe Glenn did not return.
“Joe Glenn is my head coach or I don’t wear these colors,” Stutzriem said. Wyoming hired Dave Christensen to be its coach in December after firing Glenn.
Senior Karsten Sween is listed No. 1 on the Wyoming depth chart at quarterback, followed by junior Dax Crum and redshirt freshman Adam Barry.
Buffs land hoops forward.
University of Colorado men’s basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik has completed his recruiting class for the coming season with the signing of former Saint Louis forward Marcus Relphorde, a prep standout at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Homewood, Ill.
Relphorde, 6-feet-7, 220-pounds, averaged 12 points and five rebounds at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College last season after playing in 21 games at Saint Louis the previous season. He will have two years of eligibility at CU.
Metro softball star honored.
Metro State junior catcher Tara Mickelson had quite a run last week, batting .600 (12-for-20) with 11 runs scored and 12 RBIs, and was named the Louisville Slugger/national fast pitch coaches association player of the week.
The Roadrunners (36-10) fell two spots, to No. 13, in the latest NFCA poll, and are top-seeded in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, which starts today at Auraria Field and at Regis Field.
