Citing concerns over swine flu, the union representing 50,000 flight attendants has asked that non-latex gloves and “appropriate” masks be provided to them on every flight in and out of countries affected by the spreading virus.

The Association of Flight Attendants, with members at 20 airlines, wants the the Federal Aviation Administration to issue an emergency order requiring carriers to provide the items.

Some flight attendants are already taking up the practice. Attendants on U.S. Airways flights between U.S. hubs and Mexico are wearing gloves while serving in-flight meals and beverages.

US Airways has no direct flights between Denver and Mexico but connect in Phoenix.

The gloves and masks would be available to flight attendants “at least” on trips to and from and within areas at increased risk, the union said.

“At the very least, allow flight attendants to wear their own gloves/masks without discipline,” the union said.

There has been no immediate FAA response.

In a related development, airlines — including US Airways, United, Delta, Continental and American — extended the time they’ll waive rebooking fees for travel scheduled to and from Mexico.

Denver-based Frontier Airlines on Wednesday extended its no-change fee period for travel from May 6 to May 16.

None of the U.S. airlines has canceled flights to Mexico. For the latest information, check with individual airlines.
