COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A District Court jury has found a Fort Carson soldier guilty in the deaths of a couple killed after his car crashed into their motorcycle.
Jurors deliberated for about 90 minutes Wednesday before finding 18-year-old Pfc. Brandon Howard guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide in the Dec. 7 deaths of 57-year-old Charles Coggins of Widefield and 47-year-old Jacqueline Hansen of Arvada.
They also found him guilty of speeding exhibition, a charge that he was racing another driver when he lost control of his Pontiac Gran Prix and hit the motorcycle.
Sentencing is set for June 10.
Howard has maintained that a brake failure led to the crash. But he acknowledged during the trail that he noticed the brake problem almost a week before the crash and didn’t get it fixed.
He remains free on $10,000 bond.
