LAKEWOOD — Sarah Schmeda was pretty gracious about her goals Thursday.
The Chatfield midfielder scored twice in a 2-0 victory against rival Columbine, the first after a deflection off the post and the second off a well-timed long ball.
Schmeda said she was just the recipient of a lucky bounce and a perfect pass.
“I’m happy with the outcome,” she said. “A win is always good.”
The Chargers, ranked No. 1 in The Denver Post/9News Class 5A poll, punctuated the Jefferson County League title they already had wrapped up by running the table. Chatfield improved to 14-0-1 (8-0-0 in Jeffco).
“We’ve had our bad games, but we’re still staying strong,” Schmeda said. “We’re happy about how we look going into the tournament.”
Schmeda scored in the 16th minute when she punched home a loose ball after Callie Hancock had her shot denied by the left post. Schmeda put the Rebels away in the 67th minute when she ran on to a perfect long ball by Kelly McGrath and slotted the ball inside the left post.
Chatfield’s defense, anchored by Kelsi Latham, Sara Sheets and All-Colorado goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore, limited the Rebels to just one shot on goal. The Chargers, who notched their 10th shutout of the season, prevented the Rebels (10-3-0, 5-3-0) from scoring for the first time.
“As far as our midfield and defense, and even our forwards coming back and defending, I think we did that really well today,” Latham said.
Hancock set up the first goal by beating her defender high and racing into the penalty area. She went for the left post and Bri Klomp, who usually plays forward, couldn’t get to it and it hit the post and rolled right to Schmeda.
Schmeda’s run into the box was rewarded by McGrath’s pass that gave her enough time for a touch and shot.
