Spring showers are on the way for the metro region starting Friday, with a 40 percent chance of rain in the afternoon and a 60 percent Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain chances in the city remain at 60 percent Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the mid-50s each day, forecasters said.

Sunny skies are expcted to return Monday, with temperatures in the mid-60s Monday and Tuesday and near 70 on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the forecast.

The high temperature at Denver International Airport on Thursday was 62 degrees.

The mountains have slightly less chance of snow, with daytime highs in the low 50s and nighttime lows near freezing, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service Office in Boulder noted that Friday marks the beginning Colorado’s severe weather season.

May is known for thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hailstorms and tornadoes in various regions of the state, as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico meets cold air from Canada and the Pacific Northwest, the National Weather Service states.

The average date of the last frost is May 5, greenlighting gardeners to plant vegetables for July and August harvests.

The month delivers the most moisture to Denver, 2.32 inches. Rain falls once every three days during May, which matches November as the cloudiest month.

The average daily high is 70.5 degrees, and the average low is 43.8.
