ARVADA, Colo.—Arvada police cited a sidewinding cowboy with “riding under the influence” Friday.
Police wrote the man a $25 ticket in a strip mall parking lot after receiving reports that the cowboy couldn’t stay in his saddle.
The man, Brian Drone of Arvada, told KUSA-TV he was out for a “joyride” with his horse, Cricket.
Police Sgt. Jeff Monzingo said Friday’s drunken-riding citation was the first he’d seen in 15 years of working in law enforcement. Riding an animal while under the influence is a Class B traffic violation.
Police say deciding what to do with the horse was a “tricky call” because in a typical DUI case, “you can tow a car.”
A local stable owner solved the problem by offering the man and his mount a ride home.
