LONDON — U.S. billionaire Stan Kroenke increased his stake in Arsenal to 28.3 percent, becoming the largest shareholder in the English Premier League soccer club.

Kroenke also owns the Nuggets, Avalanche, Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer and is a part-owner of the St. Louis Rams.

Kroenke, who was invited onto the Arsenal board in September, bought 4,839 shares from director Richard Carr, increasing his total to 17,613 shares. He increased his holding from 20.5 percent by buying out the Carr family’s stake.

Russian Alisher Usmanov had been the biggest investor in the north London club with more than 25 percent.

A 30 percent stake would trigger a takeover bid, under stock exchange rules.
