RANGERS PUT HAMILTON ON DL FOR RIB STRAIN

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Rangers placed outfielder Josh Hamilton on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained left rib cage muscle.

The Rangers made the move retroactive to Monday in part to create a roster spot for catcher Max Ramirez, recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to serve as the backup while regular catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia recovers from eye irritation.

Manager Ron Washington said Saltalamacchia has been advised by an eye specialist to remain in darkened rooms to give his eyes a chance to get better.

“The doctor said he needed to stay out of the light,” Washington said. “They said it could repair itself in a day or two days. (Thursday) he couldn’t see out of his right eye and (Friday) he had trouble with his left eye and the right eye is better.”

A’s third baseman Chavez goes on DL

SEATTLE — The Athletics placed oft-injured third baseman Eric Chavez on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm.

Chavez injured his arm on a swing during batting practice. The A’s recalled infielder Gregorio Petit from Triple-A Sacramento (Calif.).

McCann turning in contacts for glasses

ATLANTA — Brian McCann’s latest experiment with new contact lenses has ended, and the Braves catcher said he plans to try to resume his season wearing glasses.

McCann was placed on the DL on April 25, and tried new contact lenses on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment. The new lenses provided only a temporary fix before “it would go right back to being dry again,” McCann said.
