Brandon, a 3-year-old black Labrador retriever, has a neat trick after he fetches a ball — he tosses it out of his mouth, back to the person who threw it.

Brandon, a perpetual fetching machine, and about 40 other dogs are up for adoption this weekend at a PetSmart parking lot in Glendale.

Dogs of many breeds, ages and sizes are available, said Bill Mondragon, a PetSmart employee who helped organize the event with other adoption partners.

“We try to have a wide variety of dogs,” Mondragon said. “You never know what type of dog is going to suit a family or an owner.”

Dogs at the event are from the Adams County Humane Society, Red River County (Texas) Humane Society, and from rescue groups for golden retrievers, Great Pyrenees and greyhounds. Adoption costs run between $100 and $200, depending on the adoption sponsor, and may include neutering, spaying, medical fees and health shots, and a microchip. The event continues today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at PetSmart, 4300 E. Alameda Ave.

Brandon’s original owner is in the military and was assigned to Iraq, Mondragon said, making the lab available. “He’s a fantastic dog; he has a beautiful smile,” he said. “Everybody loves him.” Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
