FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State University’s Board of Governors on Tuesday named board member Joe Blake as the sole finalist to be chancellor of the three-campus CSU system.

A search committee reviewed more than 30 applications for the post, then recommended two candidates to the board, which named Blake the sole finalist Tuesday. The other candidate’s name wasn’t released.

Blake is president and chief executive officer of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed to CSU’s Board of Governors by Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat.

Previously, the chancellor and president’s jobs were combined, but the Board of Governors separated them when Larry Penley resigned as chancellor and president in November.

State lawmakers were considering a bill that would have required state-funded universities to publicly identify finalists for president or chancellor, but a Senate committee killed the plan Tuesday. The Senate Education Committee said making the names public would make it difficult to get top talent.
