MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said resigning from Apple’s board hasn’t crossed his mind. The two companies aren’t primary competitors, Schmidt said Thursday before Google’s annual shareholders meeting. He said he recuses himself from meetings when Apple’s board talks about the iPhone.
The Federal Trade Commission is examining whether Google and Apple are breaking antitrust law by sharing board members, a person familiar with the investigation said this week. Schmidt and Genentech chairman Arthur Levinson serve as directors at Apple and Google, which is dipping into the smart- phone market where Apple is a major player.
The FTC is looking at whether the interlocking boards could hurt competition.
