DENVER—The U.S. Department of Transportation is using economic stimulus money to speed up federal aid for a light rail line from Denver to Golden.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Thursday the Regional Transportation District will get $40 million in stimulus money.

The grant won’t increase the Federal Transit Administration’s pledge of $308.6 million for the project, but it does mean some of the money will come sooner.

The 12.1-mile line is expected to be completed in mid-2013, with 12 stations and six park-and-ride facilities.

The project is part of FasTracks, RTD’s 12-year plan to expand high-speed rail and bus service in the Denver area.
