First-degree-murder charges were filed today against a man accused of shooting and killing a convenience store clerk on May 2.

Dale Baylis, 46, allegedly shot 28-year-old Natnael Mulugeta in a 3:30 a.m. robbery at the 7-Eleven store at 567 E. Louisiana Ave.

SWAT officers arrested Baylis at his home at 1308 S. Logan St. — two blocks from the convenience store — on May 6. He is being held without bail in Denver County Jail.

Mulugeta, an Ethiopian immigrant, was shot in the chest with a rifle. He had worked at the store for about five years, according to the company.

Family members have said Baylis is bipolar. He has an extensive arrest record.

In 2003, Baylis was arrested in the beating and stabbing of a 66-year-old woman outside her apartment complex on South Park Road.
