MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. — The Kepler spacecraft has started searching for other Earthlike planets after scientists this week completed calibrating its instruments since the March 6 launch.

“Now the fun begins,” said William Borucki, Kep ler science principal investigator at NASA’s Ames Research Center.

Kepler’s first finds are expected to be large, gas planets close to their stars, as early as next year.
