BROOMFIELD, Colo.—Defense attorneys say a teenager accused of killing his 13-year-old girlfriend never confessed to the slaying and authorities are relying on statements from his teenage friends.

Eighteen-year-old Alexander Pacheco of Broomfield faces first-degree murder and other charges in the death of his former girlfriend, Kelsey Shannon. During a preliminary hearing Wednesday, detectives laid out their case for a judge, who will determine whether Pacheco will stand trial.

Broomfield detective Chris Kearns testified that witnesses told investigators that Pacheco told them he choked Kelsey, stabbed her to make sure she was dead, then had sex with her body, which went “cold in 30 seconds.”

Kelsey disappeared from her home in October. Her body was found Jan. 21.
