Lakewood police detectives are investigating a string of wallet thefts that have occurred mainly in supermarkets.

There have been 17 reported cases of wallets and purses being stolen out of shopping carts since Feb. 1.

Lakewood public-information officer Steve Davis said it’s unclear whether a single person or a team has committed the thefts.

The thefts occurred in several stores across Lakewood, mostly along the West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard corridors, Davis said. At least six thefts have been in King Soopers stores, five in Safeway and three in Whole Foods.

In a public-awareness bulletin, police said female seniors with purses are the most popular targets. Davis said the average age of victims is in the lower 60s.

Police advise shoppers to keep purses and wallets nearby. “Ideally, a purse should be held or hung on an arm or shoulder while in the store,” according to a news release.

If you are a victim of a similar case or may have information that could assist detectives, call the Lakewood Police Department at 303-987-7111.
