It has been a long time since hats were an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe, but they’re still de rigueur at Ascot, the Kentucky Derby and the Design Council’s spring luncheon at the Denver Art Museum.

From simple straws embellished with flowers to cartwheel-brimmed styles festooned with feathers and bows, the hats worn by many of the council’s supporters last week brought a breezy touch to the benefit.

Even the menu was in the spirit: a hat-shaped dessert in pink or white was at each guest’s place. Suzanne S. Brown
