Gusty conditions hampered the field Thursday for the NCAA Northeast Regional golf tournament, including sixth-seeded Colorado State, as Rams freshman Zahkai Brown carded a 5-over-par 76 in the first round at the Galloway National Golf Club in New Jersey.
Brown is in a tie for 18th place with two rounds to play. He paces CSU, which is in sixth place in the team standings. Riley Arp is one stroke behind Brown in a tie for 23rd place.
Tennessee’s Darren Renwick leads the field at 71 and the Volunteers top the standings. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Tournament.
• In the NCAA West Regional, Colorado’s Luke Symons is tied for 11th after an opening-round 70. His 2-under-par score leads a Buffaloes team tied for ninth place at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.
Southern California’s Matthew Giles leads the pack at 65 and Arizona State tops the team standings.
• Air Force’s Tom Whitney is tied for sixth place at the South Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla., after he shot an opening-round, even-par 72. Espen Kofstad leads Denver after carding a 75, and the Pioneers are in 12th place. Trent Peterson of South Dakota State leads the regional at 67 and Oklahoma State tops the team standings.
Runners Young, Cabada named to U.S. team.
Justin Young of Superior and Fernando Cabada of Boulder are among the runners named to the U.S. men’s marathon team that will compete in the world championships at Berlin in August, USA Track and Field said. The women’s marathon roster includes former University of Colorado standout Kara Goucher.
