OMAHA, Neb.—Mike Kemp, the only coach in the 12-year history of the University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey program, will become an associate athletic director at the school.
Athletic director Trev Alberts said a national search for a new coach would begin immediately.
The 56-year-old Kemp had a record of 194-223-57. He was Central Collegiate Hockey Association coach of the year in 2005, and he led the Mavericks to their only NCAA tournament appearance in 2006.
The Mavs finished 15-17-8 this past season, and they have never finished higher than fourth in the CCHA.
Alberts said he didn’t force Kemp out of coaching. Alberts called it a promotion, not a demotion.
Kemp will oversee the hockey program, as well as the golf, cross country, track and soccer teams.
