LONGMONT, Colo.—Federal regulators say state health officials did not adequately respond to an environmental group’s challenge of a permit for a cement plant near Lyons.
WildEarth Guardians claims the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment should have required the Cemex Inc. cement plant to improve pollution controls before approving the permit last year. The group argues that changes to the plant increased its emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide pollution.
Paul Tourangeau, director of the state air pollution control division, says the agency will review the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s order issued this week, state records and other documents.
Cemex spokeswoman Jennifer Borgen said the order won’t affect the plant’s operations.
