SAN ANTONIO — Paul Goydos remembered hitting one mediocre shot Friday in the Texas Open, but not any bad ones.

Goydos followed his opening 7-under-par 63 with a 65 to reach 12-under on the La Cantera Golf Club course — three strokes ahead of three-time champion Justin Leonard and four others. It’s the biggest lead Goydos has ever had on the PGA Tour.

“It’s just kind of like being the pace car, for lack of a better word,” the 44-year-old Goydos said. “We’re going to go out and play two more rounds of golf, but the tournament’s going to be in front of me (today), which is kind of cool.”

Goydos had six birdies after dropping a stroke on his first hole, the par-4 10th.

“This is why you play. If I wasn’t comfortable where I am right now, I need to find another profession,” Goydos said. “This is why we play, practice and endure rough weeks, so we learn something, to improve and get better.”

Leonard, tied with Goydos after the first round, shot a 68 to join Scott Sterling (63), John Mallinger (64), Mathias Gronberg (65) and Ted Purdy (67) at 9-under.

David Duval shot a 69 and was seven back, fading down the back nine after birdieing four of his first nine holes.

Lincicome moves into lead

CLIFTON, N.J. — Brittany Lincicome followed an opening- round 64 with a 3-under 69 to take a two-shot lead over Suzann Pettersen (70) and Ji Young Oh (69) at the LPGA Sybase Classic.

“I hit 17 greens today, which is pretty phenomenal,” Lincicome said.

The only one that Lincicome missed in a bogey-free round was at the par-4 16th.

First-round leader Helen Alfredsson, coming off a career- best 62, shot 76 in a round that included a missed tap-in. She was tied for fourth at 6-under with Wendy Doolan, who shot 68.

Michelle Wie (69), looking for her first professional win, Hall of Famer Karrie Webb (69) and Paula Creamer (69) were among a group at 5-under.

Three-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa had another 71 and was in danger of seeing her hold on this event end.

Footnotes.
