COLORADO SPRINGS — A 38-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after police say he crashed his car into the base of a famous statue during an apparent suicide attempt in Colorado Springs.
Police say the man drove his silver Mitsubishi into the base of a statue of Gen. William Jackson Palmer at about 1:45 a.m. Friday.
The man was taken to Memorial Hospital Central with undisclosed injuries. His name hasn’t been released.
The crash caused minor damage to the statue’s base and to a sign.
Palmer was the builder of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway who founded Colorado Springs—originally called Fountain Colony—as a resort in 1871.
