LOVELAND — A husband and wife who died in 2005 and 2006, respectively, have bequeathed $2 million to their hometown of Berthoud, south of Loveland.

Longtime farmers Doyle and Luvesta Jones set up the donation through the Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps manage and invest endowments. The foundation announced the gift Thursday at its annual Celebration of Philanthropy in Fort Collins.

Its president, Ray Caraway, says Doyle and Luvesta Jones wanted their donation to be distributed to various nonprofit groups for years to come. In particular, they hoped the money would help build a community recreation center. Caraway says that with the proper investing, the fund could grant about $100,000 a year and remain sustainable.
