GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The father of a missing woman wants the FBI to investigate what happened to thousands of dollars in her home and whether Grand Junction authorities are responsible for taking it.
Frank Birgfeld said in letters to the Mesa County Sheriff’s office and Colorado Attorney General John Suthers that the allegations about the missing money were revealed by the CBS television program “48 Hours,” which aired a program about his daughter last year. During the show, sources told “48 hours” that investigators found tens of thousands of dollars at Paige Birgfeld’s home, Frank Birgfeld said.
Paige Birgfeld, a 34-year-old mother of three, was last seen on June 2007. No one has been charged in the case and her body has never been found. Authorities have said she was working as an escort, a revelation that surprised the people who knew her.
Birgfeld’s father said she probably had money hidden in her million-dollar home in Grand Junction.
Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said the allegations about the money are unfounded.
“However, it does not dissuade this office from its commitment or desire to successfully resolve the Paige Birgfeld case, nor will his complaints ever cause any lapse in professional ethics or integrity by any member of this agency,” Hilkey said in a written statement.
He also told The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel that he welcomes an FBI investigation because his office wants to “be as transparent as possible.”
