Matt Daley figured a swinging bat, not a rolling bat, could hurt him. In the seventh inning Sunday, the Rockies reliever, who had replaced Jason Grilli as the top right-handed setup man, stepped on Freddy Sanchez’s bat as he ran to back up home plate, spraining his left foot. Plate umpire Bill Welke had kicked the bat into Daley’s path. Daley will be placed on the disabled list. He will have more X-rays today or Tuesday in Denver.
Bunt force trauma.
With runners at first and second in the seventh and no outs, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle let Ubaldo Jimenez bunt rather than have Seth Smith pinch hit, saying Jimenez is a better bunter. Jimenez failed to move the runners, tempering a potential rally.
Big 10.
The last time the Rockies allowed 10 runs in one inning was in Mark Redman’s first inning against the Dodgers on April 26 last year.
