DENVER—Six coyotes have been killed in Greenwood Village since early this year, when City Council members authorized killing aggressive animals.

Ryan Gregory, spokesman for the city manager’s office, says four of the animals were killed by police, and two were killed by a sharpshooter hired by the city.

The City Council in early February approved limited shooting of coyotes in parks and other public areas.

The decision has angered animal rights groups. But the city says lethal measures are necessary as the coyotes have become acclimated to their urban environment and, in some cases, aggressive.

City officials said Monday they recognize the value and benefits provided by all wildlife. They said the city has a comprehensive management plan that includes hazing in an effort to spare coyotes’ lives.
