SAN JOSE, Calif. — Cisco Systems Inc., the world’s largest maker of networking equipment, plans to sell products that help utility companies improve the reliability of the electrical grid and boost energy efficiency.

The “smart-grid” technology may account for $1 billion of Cisco’s sales in about five years, Judy Lin, general manager of the company’s Ethernet Switching Technology Group, said in an interview.
