Colorado’s largest utility says the price it charges for natural gas will jump 39 percent next month compared with the current month, but because of lower gas consumption in June because of warmer weather, the bills are expected to be lower than this month’s.

Xcel Energy Inc. said Monday it submitted the proposed rate increase to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

Typical residential bills next month will average $21.26, compared with $25.53 this month, Xcel said.

The utility said gas prices are increasing on expectations of higher demand from commercial and manufacturing customers as the recession moderates.
