GUNNISON, Colo.—The public will have a chance to weigh in on efforts to conserve the Gunnison’s prairie dog.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife is developing a conservation plan for the prairie dog and will take comments and ideas from the public in a daylong workshop Thursday at Western State College in Gunnison.
Federal officials have determined that the Gunnison’s prairie dog in north-central New Mexico and south-central Colorado warrants federal protection but other species are higher priorities. Colorado officials want to take steps to avoid having the prairie dog declared endangered.
The Division of Wildlife is also developing a conservation plan for white-tailed prairie dogs.
