DENVER—Democrats picked a Denver lobbyist to replace a vacancy left by Sen. Jennifer Veiga, Colorado’s first openly gay lawmaker in the Legislature who is moving to Australia.

A vacancy committee picked Pat Steadman over nine other candidates Wednesday night. Veiga resigned at the end of the legislative session because her partner is from Australia and she wanted to be with her mother.

Veiga had endorsed Steadman, who becomes the third openly gay lawmaker at the Capitol.

Steadman was a lobbyist with Mendez, Steadman & Associates, Inc. His firm announced early Thursday he would be resigning to concentrate on his new post and will completely divest his interest in the company.
