SALIDA, Colo.—A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled for Tuesday in Chaffee County to determine whether the death of a woman who fell from a 10-foot cliff into a stream was accidental.

Forty-seven-year-old Nancy Ann Mason died May 30, 2004, while fishing along Chalk Creek. Her husband, Dan, and a friend, Efren Gallegos, said they heard Nancy Mason scream twice after she slipped.

Sheriff’s officials say an autopsy showed her neck was broken and she couldn’t have screamed. Undersheriff Keith Pinkston also said it was so rough, rocky and noisy along the creek that they couldn’t have heard her scream even if she had.

Dan Mason told The Denver Post the scream may have been a “paranormal” manifestation from an angel.

The inquest is expected to last four days.
