A 46-year-old man suspected of stealing wallets from supermarket and grocery stores in recent months has been arrested by the Lakewood Police Department.
The man was identified as Tony White, who allegedly stole a woman’s wallet from her purse at a King Soopers store at West Colfax Avenue and Quail Street.
The victim left her purse in a shopping cart.
After interviewing White, detectives became convinced that he was involved in similar cases in recent months, said Steve Davis, spokesman for the Lakewood Police Department.
White was booked at the Jefferson County Jail for investigation of theft and burglary. He also is being held on an outstanding warrant for theft and giving false information to a pawn broker.
Police stressed today that shoppers should never leave their wallet unattended in a shopping cart. Purses should be closed and carried on the shoulder or arm while shopping.
Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by White — or has had a wallet stolen in a similar incident — is asked to call Lakewood police at 303-987-7111.
