The University of Denver women’s golf team dropped two spots — to fifth — after the third round of the NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., on Thursday.

The Pioneers shot a 21-over-par 309, leaving them at 43-over 907, 17 strokes behind the new leader, Southern California. The Trojans shot a 294 in the third round and have a one-stroke lead over Arizona State, which also leapfrogged second-round leader UCLA.

Jennifer Song of Southern Cal leads the chase for individual champion after a 71 that has her at even-par 216, two strokes ahead of Maria Fernandez of Purdue and second-round leader Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA, who followed Wednesday’s 66 with a 77.

DU’s Stephanie Sherlock, the first-round co-leader, had another tough day, with a 7-over 79. She’s tied for eighth at 6-over 222. Dawn Shockley (Estes Park High School) is at 224 after a 77 and is tied for 20th.
