Dexter Fowler is counterpunching. After beginning the season on a tear, the rookie center fielder soon found that opposing pitchers were discovering his soft spots. His team-high 34 strikeouts testify to that. But now Fowler is making adjustments of his own. He has a triple in two of his last four games and went 2-for-3 on Sunday, raising his average to .271. He also stole his 11th base.
Detroit shut down.
The relief trio of Randy Flores, Manuel Corpas and Huston Street dead-ended the Tigers over the last three innings. None of the three allowed a baserunner, and Flores struck out two of the three batters he faced. It was the fourth straight scoreless appearance for the left-hander. Street notched his seventh save.
Wasted opportunities.
Although the Rockies won Sunday, they once again wasted a number of chances to break the game open, going 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base.
