Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni is back on the U.S. national team that will train for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras in June.
Mastroeni, a midfielder, has 63 caps with Team USA and played in the World Cup in 2002 and 2006. He also has been part of three CONCACAF Gold Cup championships.
He will report to Team USA on Sunday after playing Saturday for the Rapids against the New York Red Bulls in an MLS match at the Meadowlands.
DU golfers honored.
University of Denver junior golfer Stephanie Sherlock, who helped the Pioneers finish fifth at the NCAA championships, was named to the All-America second team by the National Golf Coaches Association. It is Sherlock’s third consecutive All-America honor.
Sherlock and DU seniors Katie Kempter and Dawn Shockley made the NGCA’s all-East Region team.
Sky Sox shut down Express.
Greg Smith pitched five shutout innings and the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox held Round Rock to three hits in a 4-0 victory over the Express in Round Rock, Texas.
Sky Sox third baseman Mike McCoy had two RBIs. Eric Young Jr. and Carlos Gonzalez each had two hits.
