This ale, named for the giant Scottish swords and also known as a “Wee Heavy,” pours a barely transparent coffee color with a creamy beige head that leaves a good bit of lacing in the glass. The aroma holds malty, smoky notes, and the flavor is strong caramel, sweet malt and breadiness with a hint of rye and barely-there hops on the finish. The 7.7 percent alcohol by volume is more evident in the warm afterglow than on the nose or in the mouth. The sweetness of Claymore makes it a good complement for salty and hearty foods such as pot roast. Be there for Great Divide’s 15th anniversary celebration from 2-7 p.m. June 6 with plenty of great beer and tasty live music.
