Just as it’s safe to say that almost everyone was familiar with the present-day accomplishments of Jay Davidson, Murphy Huston, Dick Saunders and Mort Marks, the shrieks of laughter as the video rolled at The Arthritis Foundation’s Evening of Honors indicated that their pasts held many surprises.
Pictures culled from family albums showed Saunders, founder and chairman of Saunders Construction, standing with a group of New Guineans. An image of Marks, a Republican activist and columnist for the Villager newspaper, showed him in the dress, lipstick and rouge he’d worn to crash a “girlfriends party” celebrating wife Edie’s birthday.
Davidson, founder and chairman of First American State Bank, had been photographed (with a look of sheer terror on his face) riding shotgun in a jet fighter, while Huston, morning show co-host on KOSI and one-time manager of a Tastee Freez, was pictured teeing off on a snow-covered golf course.
Lisa Williams, Jan Rice- Johnson, Lori Marks-Connors and Dr. Stuart Kassan chaired the second annual Evening of Honors. Entertainment was by Roy Firestone, the Emmy-winning sports interviewer, humorist and impersonator. There were 300 guests and a net profit “in excess of” $100,000.
Master of ceremonies Gregg Moss also introduced Chatfield High School junior Jessica Olona, who spoke about her own battle with arthritis.
The 300 guests included Olona’s doctor, Roger Hollister; U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman and his wife, Cynthia; photographer John Fielder; Walt and Georgia Imhoff; LaFawn Biddle; Del and Millie Hock; Shery McDonald Galbreath; Leo and Linda Goto; Steve Edmonds; Paul and Sue Ellen Goss; David Alexander; Dr. John and Nancy Cowee; Caroline Karlin; Charlie and Judy McNeil; Gail Johnson; Stan and Sarah Sena; Ernie Blake and Sharon Magness Blake; and The Arthritis Foundation’s executive director, Pat Gottfried.
