BAGHDAD — An American soldier and four Iraqi civilians died Wednesday when a bomb exploded on a Baghdad street as a U.S. military patrol drove past, officials said.

The death of the soldier, whose name was not released, brings to at least 20 the number of U.S. soldiers who have died this month, the most since September 2008, when 25 service members died.

In recent months, there has been an uptick in attacks against Iraqi civilians and U.S. forces, leading to concerns that insurgents are regrouping before the June 30 deadline for U.S. combat troops to withdraw from Iraqi cities.

The attack Wednesday occurred at about 2 p.m. as an American convoy was passing through the Abu Ghraib district in western Baghdad.
