Two Conifer High School students jumped on the hood of an SUV on Wednesday, moments before one fell off and was run over by the vehicle, the Colorado State Patrol said today.

That student suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is listed in fair condition at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ryan Sullivan.

According to Sullivan, the 17-year-old student behind the wheel of a gray 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer was southbound in the student parking lot when two other students jumped on the SUV’s hood.

The first of the students jumped off shortly after jumping on, but the second student, a 17-year-old junior, fell off and was run over.

Sullivan said the investigation is ongoing and that State Patrol troopers are currently reviewing surveillance video of the incident.

He said it’s possible that charges could be filed against both the driver and the victim, depending on what investigators find.

Lynn Setzer, spokeswoman for Jefferson County schools, said Wednesday that the driver of the SUV and the injured student are “dear friends.”

“She is very upset,” said Setzer of the driver.

She said the injured student was “goofing around” and jumped onto the hood of the vehicle.

She was peering through the windshield at the driver when she fell off the hood and was run over by the moving vehicle, said Setzer.

The driver and the injured girl had just driven back to the school after having lunch, said Setzer.

The accident occurred about 1 p.m. Wednesday. Today is the last day of school.
